ABOUT THE ALBUM:

Reggae Greats features the work of Bob Marley and the Wailers, making a special emphasis to use songs that utilize all three of the primary musicians: Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer. What this means to the casual listener is first that the tracks are somewhat more instrumental in nature, and secondly that some of Marley’s best-known work is absent (recorded with other musicians after the dissolution of the Wailers). Probably the best-known song on the album here would be the extra political “Get Up Stand Up” (co-written by Tosh). Other lesser-known songs here are certainly noteworthy, however, including “Small Axe” (written early in the Wailers’ career, when they were competing with the “Big Trees” of the industry), “Rock It Baby” (an earlier, more ska-inflected, somewhat rocksteady item), and an arrangement of a traditional Rasta chant. For collectors and devotees alike, this album might be something worth looking into, as most greatest-hits compilations focus more on Marley’s later, solo work.
