Grammys: Top honors for 'Mind Control'
Stephen Marley wins Best Reggae Album
By Dream Hampton / BobMarley.com
Stephen Marley's critically acclaimed Mind Control took home the Grammy for Best Reggae Album at the 50th Annual ceremony, besting three of the genre's most legendary artsists. Burning Spear, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly and Robbie and the Taxi Gang and Toots and the Maytals were all nominated in the category, making it a real contest. Reggae is often treated by the Academy the way hip-hop was in the early '90s, as an afterthought, with random releases stacked against one another. This year however, four outstanding releases were nominated, with Stephen surrounded by his musical forefathers.

Mind Control is Stephen's debut album as a solo artist. A highly sought after producer, Stephen has laid down tracks for Erykah Badu, Buju Banton, Eve, Spearhead and brothers Julian, Zigggy and Damien, whose best selling Welcome to Jamrock won Best Reggae Album in 2006. Mind Control is a mash-up of classic roots and genre bending collabos that include appearances by rapper Mos Def, Ben Harper and a cover of Ray Charles' "Lonely Avenue." As a producer, co-writer and now, solo artist, Stephen Marley has taken home a total of six Grammys, more than any other reggae artist.
