Recap: Kaya Festival 2018

05.01.2018

The Marley brothers celebrated the 40th anniversary of their father’s album, Kaya, with a 2 day festival in San Bernardino, CA. Stephen Marley founded the music and awareness festival last year in Miami and this year’s second round in California was a huge hit.

The 2018 Kaya Festival was a celebration of reggae as well as an educational experience. A free symposium, “Education Before Recreation,” was held the day before the festival and featured discussions on the many uses and benefits of the cannabis plant as well as new California laws and regulations.

Highlights of the festival included a family performance with all 5 performing Marley Brothers:, Stephen, Ziggy, Damian, Julian, and Ky-Mani. The brothers embodied the spirit of their father in a beautiful tribute to him. Ms. Lauryn Hill headlined the second night of the festival and the weekend was full of great reggae and reggae-inspired music from acts including Soja, Yandel, Cypress Hill, Toots & the Maytals, Skip Marley, Daniel “Bambaata” Marley, Jo Mersa Marley, and more.

In a press conference, Stephen said of the event,

“Kaya Fest is the next platform that we use to bring people together, teach them, tell them the truth, you know. Not all miracles come from the sky. Some miracles come from the earth and herb is one of those.[…] We’re very excited to come together (as brothers) and play music here in California.[…] It’s definitely as close to Bob as we could ever get. When all of our spirits come together and we transcend that out there (to the crowd). We definitely feel it every time.”
