The One Love Youth Camp, 2016!

This week, over 50 young people from across Kingston and St Ann came together at the One Love Youth Camp to ignite their creative skills and promote Bob Marley’s vision of peace, love and social equality. The camp takes place in Bob’s home parish of St. Ann, and is the result of a sweet partnership between the Bob Marley Foundation, Partners for Youth Empowerment (PYE) and ice cream makers Ben & Jerry’s.

The One Love Youth Camp returns for its third installment, to give young people of Jamaica the chance to stir up their own take on Bob Marley’s most iconic songs, and learn how to use music, dance and arts to respond challenges in their lives and break down barriers. The camp is facilitated by 25 local teachers and facilitators, who have been through an intensive Creative Facilitation training process that gives them the skills and resources to use the arts to help young people to reach their full potential.

Following the One Love Youth Camp, teachers and facilitators will take what they’ve learnt back to their communities to directly benefit more of Jamaica’s underserved youth. The training model and One Love camp were designed by PYE and funded by proceeds from Ben & Jerry’s tribute flavour to Bob Marley, Satisfy My Bowl.

Ed Shepherd, Social Mission Manager Ben & Jerry’s says: “Bob Marley stood for more than just music – he inspired millions to think about peace, love, and equality. We’re happy to play a small role in making Bob’s legacy, and vision for a sweeter world, travel further this year.”

Ziggy Marley says: “The One Love Youth Camp has positively effected youth in Jamaica, providing social and interpersonal tools they can use throughout life. The youth are our future and we look forward to expanding the camp with our partners at PYE and Ben & Jerry’s.”

Gwyn Wansbrough, Executive Director, PYE UK adds: “We’re delighted return to Jamaica to enable passionate teachers use the arts to help young people deal with challenges and reach their potential. Last year showed us that Jamaica has incredibly talented and inspiring young people, and I’m sure this year will be no different!”
